    Description

The economic malaise affecting the airline industry during a 1970-1971 recession, plus a prolonged Northwest Airlines' employee strike, delayed the opening of the airline's inaugural service to Boston awarded it by Civil Aeronautics Board in the 1970 Twin Cities - Milwaukee Long-Haul Investigation until September 1, 1971.
This cover was carried on the inaugural Air Mail Route 3 flight from Boston, Massacusetts
to Minneapolis, Minnesota (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Contract Air Mail Flights (CAM) section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as 9W107.
On April 15, 2008, Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines announced a merger agreement. The merger of the two carriers formed what was then the largest commercial airline in the world, with 786 aircraft. Delta Air Lines' brand survived, while Northwest's brand officially ended in 2009.
